Underwriter - An Investment banker
that sells new issues to the public.
Underwriting refers to when an insurance company selects and classifies their risk exposure.
The term comes from the old days where Lloyds of London would post a piece of paper on the wall with someone's name on it that needed insurance (including the amount they needed).
People who were willing to insure them would write their name on the piece of paper under the name of the person needing insurance.
They would also list the amount they were willing to insure.
Often each insurance case would have several underwriters.
