Ex Dividend

(4 business days prior to the record date)

Ex dividend - means without dividendDefinition.

Dividends are declared on set dates.

If sold stock cannot be delivered before dividend payment is made, the seller gets to keep the dividend.

A regular way transactionDefinition takes 5 days for the stock to be delivered.

On the ticker tape there will be an XDefinition following the name if the stock is trading ex dividend.

Stocks sell ex dividend on the 4th day before the record dateDefinition.

The ex dividend date for a mutual fundDefinition is the same as the record date (none of this 4 day stuff).

The mutual fund ex dividend cannot be determined.
