Bonds
Bonds - holder is the creditor of issuer.
In every case bonds are classified as debt.
Usually $1,000 or $5,000 face values
at maturity.
Interest payments are spread out (called coupon payments) and are a fixed rate throughout the life of the bond.
As an investor, whether in the primary or secondary market, when you buy bonds at a discount, that discount when realized, is treated as a capital gain.
