Balloon Maturity
Balloon maturity - type of bond
maturity schedule where a small number of bonds mature serially (each year) and the large number mature in a later year.
Gets its name because for all intents and purposes, it amounts to a balloon payment for the issuer.
(A balloon payment is slang for a loan payback where you pay nothing towards what is due until the due date, at which time you pay the full amount).
Basically, any big, one-time, large-chunk, payment that is due in the future at a set date is referred to as a balloon payment.
